Synopsis

The story follows the life of Auan, a young female construction worker and the eldest daughter of Ing, a foreman. They work for Sia Sumeth, a small-scale contractor. The group of laborers includes Phan, Wian, At, Ngoen, Kling, Phon, Jong, Chan, Kep, On, and Waeo, who all live together in the worker’s camp.
Auan is impulsive, hot-headed, and outspoken, much like a man. She didn't receive a high education because she had to leave school to help her father work. They live in a slum community. Ing’s family consists of Plian, his gossip-prone wife; Ong, the middle daughter who works as a seamstress and dreams of owning a dress shop; and On, the youngest daughter and the only one still in school, who dreams of becoming a lawyer.
Jong, a skilled mason, is secretly in love with Auan. He is hardworking, diligent, does not drink or smoke. Ing and Plian openly support Jong because they see he is a good man, but Auan never looks at him that way.
Sia Sumeth lands a new job building a mansion for Khun Trakul, the husband of Jurai, a wealthy aristocratic couple. They have an only son named Krip, who is the total package: handsome, rich, educated, and polite. Auan falls for Krip the moment she sees him, pushing Jong even further out of her sight.
Auan is infatuated with Krip to the point of dreaming. She tries to get close to him by offering to help with housework for free, enduring the bossiness of Jit, the old housekeeper who is meddlesome and complains constantly. An opportunity arises when Lap, a servant in Krip's house, needs surgery for gallstones. Auan volunteers to replace her during her recovery. Jurai agrees to hire Auan. Ing tries to stop his daughter, not wanting her to be a servant as he takes pride in construction work, but Auan insists she doesn't want to be a laborer forever; she wants a better life.
Meanwhile, Chan, the most beautiful girl at the construction site, spreads her charm until Ngoen falls hopelessly in love with her. However, Chan continues to flirt with Jong, while Jong remains loyal to Auan. Kep is another girl who wants Jong and tries to get close to him, leading to a catfight with Chan. Auan warns Jong about women because she doesn't want trouble in the camp, fearing Krip will view her negatively. However, Jong deludes himself into thinking Auan is jealous, which makes him happy despite being scolded.
Because of Krip's friendly and humble nature, Auan deceives herself into thinking Krip has feelings for her. However, her dreams are shattered when reality hits: Krip has many women in his life who are beautiful, rich, and far out of her league. Auan becomes dissatisfied with her life and compares herself to those women, but she endures everything just to be near Krip. The nicer Krip is to her, the more encouraged she feels to fight for her love.
Jong tries to open his heart to Auan but is coldly rejected, leaving him heartbroken. He suspects Auan likes Yong, the gardener at Krip's house who keeps bothering her, never imagining Auan would aim as high as Krip. Yong realizes Auan likes Krip and tries to assault her. When he fails, he insults her for not knowing her place. Yong then moves on to flirt with On until they get together. When Jong finds out about On and Yong, he worries about Auan, thinking she likes Yong. Eventually, Jong learns the truth from Yong. He tries to tell Auan to give up on Krip, but they argue. In the heat of the moment, Jong forces a kiss on Auan and gets slapped.
Chan gets bored of Ngoen and looks for a reason to leave the camp, though she still visits to ask for money. One day, Ngoen returns crying, needing his friends to comfort him because Chan has run off with a new boyfriend. Jong, heartbroken over Auan’s love for Krip, considers going to work in Taiwan to build his fortune. Gossip spreads that Auan is reaching too high because Yong runs his mouth. Ing has to warn Auan directly that it's impossible, but she stubbornly refuses to listen.
The girls at the site get excited when a new worker, Bunkoen, arrives. He looks innocent and handsome, winning the hearts of older women like Jit and the widow Mon. Mon and Jit fight over him. Bunkoen, who looks innocent but is actually cunning and lazy, chooses Jit because she has better financial status. Meanwhile, Ing and Plian fight because Ing catches Plian gambling. Plian promises to stop but can't resist; she escalates from buying lottery tickets to selling them (becoming a bookie).
Lap recovers and returns to work, forcing Auan to leave Krip’s house. She becomes depressed. Jong remains by her side. Everyone tries to dissuade Jong from going to Taiwan, but he insists on building a future, hoping Auan might look at him if he returns successful. Everyone sees Jong’s sincerity except Auan. Disaster strikes when Auan is hit by a car, and Plian is arrested for selling lottery tickets. The money meant for the hospital is used to bail Plian out. To make matters worse, Plian owes a huge sum for winning tickets she hadn't sent to the main dealer yet. Auan's family is in deep trouble.
Ngoen, heartbroken over Chan, is constantly drunk. Suddenly, Chan returns asking for money despite having a new man. Everyone sees through her and warns Ngoen, but blinded by love, he gives her everything. To Chan, Ngoen is just a fool. Meanwhile, Jit, having slept with Bunkoen, starts dressing younger. The workers suspect Bunkoen’s behavior as he disappears at night. They stage a fake "fire" alarm, causing panic. Jit and Bunkoen run out of the bedroom together in shock, exposing their affair. Jit openly lives with Bunkoen amidst the concern of well-wishers.
Auan’s obsession with Krip continues. Despite being injured from the car accident, she drags her broken body to serve him. Yong, being foul-mouthed, mocks her until Auan hits him, breaking his head. Furious, Yong beats Auan. Lap and Jong save her. Before leaving, Yong insults Auan, saying she doesn't know her place and that a low-class laborer like her wouldn't be wanted by Krip even for free. Humiliated and heartbroken, Auan decides to leave Krip's house. She takes her anger out on her family, determined to get rich so no one can look down on her. Jong stays by her side through her tantrums until Auan softens, finally seeing his goodness. Jong proposes, and she accepts, delighting everyone.
After a simple wedding, the family rents a shophouse to open a curry rice shop. Capital is an issue, so Jong mortgages his land, while Auan borrows from Krip (hiding the source from Jong). Chan returns to trick Ngoen into using his savings for a down payment on a "house for their future," while she parades a new guy she claims is a talent scout. Everyone pities the gullible Ngoen.
Auan’s shop sells well, but instead of happiness, Auan becomes greedy and bossy. She buys cheap ingredients, causing food poisoning among customers. Plian is furious that her daughter’s greed ruined their reputation. Auan feels guilty and tries to improve.
Bunkoen reveals his true colors. Bored of Jit, he tricks her out of a lump sum of money and runs away. He meets Sa-ard, a beautiful masseuse, and they gamble together. When the money runs out, Bunkoen returns to Jit, who forgives him. Meanwhile, Jong feels slighted by Auan’s bossiness and suspects she still loves Krip. Plian tricks Auan into thinking Jong is seeing other women. Terrified of losing him, Auan swallows her pride and reconciles, making Jong very happy.
On breaks up with Yong due to his cheating and pursues her dream of singing. She enters a contest, but despite not winning, is approached by a scout. However, it turns out to be a scam, and the sisters lose money to the con artist. On doesn't give up and keeps competing. Waeo is inspired to become a beautician. The workers, including Jong, start pursuing their dreams. Jong consults Ing about becoming an independent contractor. Sia Sumeth graciously supports them. Auan is thrilled to finally be a "boss's wife."
Krip re-enters their lives, offering a factory construction job out of goodwill. Auan now respects him only as a good person, but Jong is consumed by jealousy. They fight, and Jong leaves the house. He runs into Sa-ard (Bunkoen's ex-fling) and sleeps with her. Instead of feeling good, he feels terribly guilty and vows not to do it again.
Someone offers to buy Jong’s land. Jong takes the money to repay Khun Wad (who Auan claimed she borrowed from), only to learn Auan lied and the money came from Krip. Jong returns to fight with Auan, who sarcastically says she still loves Krip. Meanwhile, Ngoen realizes he was scammed by Chan and her "scout" husband. Jong and Ngoen get drunk together. Jong, confused, visits Sa-ard but runs into Bunkoen. Sa-ard kicks Bunkoen out. Bunkoen runs to tell Auan about Jong and Sa-ard. Furious, Auan storms Krip's house to find Bunkoen to lead her to Jong. Jit defends Bunkoen, but screams when Auan reveals Sa-ard was Bunkoen's wife. Jit realizes she was tricked into thinking they were cousins.
Jong retreats to a temple to stay with a monk. Krip talks to Auan, making her realize no one loves her like Jong, and bluntly telling her he never saw her as anything more than a worker because he chooses the best for himself. Though it hurts, Auan is finally free from her fantasy. Auan, Bunkoen, and Jit go to Sa-ard’s room but find thugs instead. A fight breaks out at a pub, and Bunkoen is shot dead. Seeing Jit’s heartbreak, Auan realizes life is short.
Jong decides to stop running. He takes Ngoen to clear things up with Auan. On the way, Jong helps a victim of a purse snatching and gets stabbed. Auan is shocked to learn Jong is in critical condition and realizes how much she loves him. At Bunkoen’s funeral, his secrets are revealed—he abandoned his parents and wife/kids years ago; the money Ngoen sent was for them. Jit is devastated.
Chan returns to Ngoen again after being dumped, but this time Ngoen ignores her. He considers ordaining as a monk but decides to go home to farm instead. Waeo opens her salon. On continues singing. Krip visits Jong, and they reconcile. Krip announces the construction bid was approved, and Jong can start as soon as he recovers.
Auan asks Krip for more time to repay the debt due to medical bills, but Krip says Jong already paid it all. Sa-ard visits to tell Auan that Jong loves only her. Auan realizes how lucky she is. As construction work pours in, they are short-handed, so Auan returns to work, wearing her familiar "dust-colored shirt" (Suea Si Fun). The couple dreams of getting rich again, but Ing scolds them to stay in reality—to build slowly, work hard, and not be greedy. Everyone realizes that regardless of status, success comes from diligence and finding happiness in what one has.
