Jamrat Suwakhon

Jamrat Suwakon was a renowned Thai actor who rose to prominence as a leading man of Siang Srikrung Film Company during the pre–World War II era. He was active for approximately six years, from 1936 to 1942.

Jamrat was known for his handsome, sharp-featured appearance, refined and gentlemanly demeanor, and his resonant true tenor voice, which was both powerful and melodious, adding greatly to his charm on screen.

He first appeared in the film Blood of the Farmer (Lueat Chao Na), released in July 1936, as a supporting actor. In the same film, he performed the song “Tawan Yor Saeng” (“The Sun Rises in Radiance”), which became widely popular and helped establish his reputation.

Recognizing his star potential and the warm reception from audiences, Srikrung soon cast him in a leading role in Afraid of One’s Wife (Klua Mia, 1936), opposite Manee Sumonnat, a famous actress under the same studio. The film was both a critical and commercial success, firmly establishing Jamrat as a top leading man. He was granted the prestigious “special chair” status, a Hollywood-style recognition reserved for elite stars of the studio.

At the height of his fame, Jamrat attracted enthusiastic female fans of all ages. On several occasions, he reportedly had to leave radio stations through back exits to avoid large crowds waiting to see him.

The most celebrated collaboration of the beloved screen pair “Manee–Jamrat” came with the lavish musical film Sweetheart Song (Phleng Wan Jai), released in October 1937. The film was an outstanding success and became a major box-office hit. As a reward, Srikrung presented Jamrat with a luxurious red GM sports car, one of the most stylish vehicles of the era.

 (He later made newspaper headlines after being involved in an accident while driving the car, which fell from a steep wooden bridge over the Phra Khanong Canal.)

Jamrat went on to star in several more films, his final appearance being Better a Flood Than a Drought (Nam Thuam Di Kwa Fon Laeng, 1942). Shortly thereafter, Srikrung Film Company was forced to cease operations due to severe flooding and wartime conditions that caused a shortage of film stock. As a result, Jamrat’s stardom gradually faded.

Before his passing, he made occasional appearances as a guest singer on programs broadcast by Thai Television Channel 4, Bang Khun Phrom. He maintained a private personal life, had a family, and was the father of one son.

Today, Jamrat Suwakon is remembered as a pioneering leading man of Thai cinema and is widely regarded as part of the first iconic on-screen couple in Thai film history, alongside Manee Sumonnat, known collectively as “Manee–Jamrat.”
