Biography
Uthen Boonyong
Uthen Boonyong was a former Thai actor and a leading man in classic Thai cinema.
He rose to prominence through films produced and directed by Piak Poster, one of Thailand’s most influential filmmakers of the era.
- Born: 4 September 1945
- Died: 12 August 2023 (aged 77)
Career in Entertainment
Uthen was first noticed by a businessman in the entertainment industry, who recognized his strong potential due to his tall and well-built physique.
He initially began his career as a fashion runway model.
Later, a friend who worked as an entertainment journalist introduced him to Piak Poster, a renowned producer and director at the time. After a screen test, Piak was highly impressed and selected Uthen to star as the leading actor in his new film:
Khao Saming (1973)
At that time, Piak was actively searching for a new leading man. Uthen was cast opposite the highly popular actress Phawana Chanachit.
However, the film did not achieve the expected success because its theatrical release coincided with the October 14, 1973 uprising, also known as the Day of Great Upheaval, which significantly affected cinema attendance nationwide.
International Film Project (Thai–Italian Co-production)
In early March 1974, Uthen was cast in a large-scale international film co-produced by Thailand and Italy, where he starred alongside:
- Montgomery Wood, a well-known Italian actor
Filming took place in Italy. Uthen performed action scenes featuring Muay Thai, fighting against characters using karate and kung fu.
According to the original agreement, Muay Thai was not supposed to be portrayed as inferior. However, the final direction required the Thai martial art to lose to foreign fighting styles. Combined with what Uthen perceived as deceptive tactics and unfair treatment by the Italian production team, tensions escalated.
Unable to tolerate the situation, Uthen became involved in a confrontation and ultimately returned to Thailand. As a result, the film was never completed.
Serious Car Accident
In the early morning of 2 November 1979, Uthen traveled to Kamphaeng Phet Province to promote and film the movie:
Lan Narok (Hunting Hell)
He worked alongside renowned actress Mayura Thanabutr.
While returning to Bangkok, near Nakhon Luang Intersection, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, a truck suddenly pulled out from an intersection. Uthen’s driver swerved to avoid a collision, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn.
- Mayura Thanabutr sustained severe injuries
- She was rushed to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital
- She later recovered and survived
Later Career and Final Work
Uthen continued acting steadily over the years, appearing in roles as a leading man, supporting actor, and extra.
- Final acting role:
- Keng Jing Na Tua Khae Nia (1992)
