Luang Bharata Kammakosol
Thailand’s First Movie Villain
Luang Bharata Kammakosol (original name: Mongkol Sumanat) was a pioneering figure in Thai cinema. He is widely recognized as the first villain in Thai film history and later became well known for his roles in Dara Film television productions, such as Hong Hun (The Puppet Room) and Khot Haeng Kam (The Law of Karma).
🏛️ Family Background and Government Service
- His grandfather, Khun Natkanulak, served as Head of the Royal Khon Department during the reign of King Rama V.
- His father, Phra Chansukkit, held the same position in the early reign of King Rama VI.
- Luang Bharata Kammakosol himself entered government service in the Department of Mahorasop (Royal Khon Department), which later became the Fine Arts Department.
- He was later granted the noble title “Luang Bharata Kammakosol.”

In his youth, he was a talented football player and once served as a member of the Thailand national football team.

- In 1923, Thailand’s first film, Miss Suwanna, was produced by an American filmmaking team.

In 1984, Dome Sukwong, Prasit Disilpakit, and Somchart Bangchang, among the first staff members of the Thai Film Archive, visited Luang Bharata Kammakosol to document the life of an actor who had appeared in:
- Miss Suwanna (1923)
- Double Luck (Chok Song Chan, 1927), the first Thai film made by Thai filmmakers
Although the project was never completed as planned, it became his final appearance on camera.

Luang Bharata Kammakosol is remembered as:
- The longest-serving professional actor in Thai history
- And the second longest-serving professional actor in the world
He passed away the following year.
