Biography
Sompong Phongmit, nickname Nok, was a Thai comedian and actor. He was honored as a National Artist in Performing Arts in 1998.
Date of birth: July 8, 1920
Date of death: May 30, 2001 (aged 82)
He was born in Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, and moved to Bangkok at the age of 7. He began his career performing likay and khon before transitioning to sketch comedy and stand-up comedy. He formed his own troupe called Benchasin Phongmit, and later performed with the Thepsin troupe of Sor Asanajinda, alongside Lotok and Chusri Misommon. He reached the height of his fame around 1957, and was a member of a famous comedy group that included Lotok, Dokdin (Dokdin Kanyamarn), and Chusri.
He was well known for a comedic style that emphasized facial expressions and physical gestures more than spoken dialogue. He also directed films, including Wao Noi (1970) and Taharn Akat Khat Rak (Air Force Soldier Without Love) in 1981.
In his later years, he suffered from several chronic health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and vision problems. Sompong passed away on May 30, 2001, at the age of 82.
