Biography
Manat Boonyakiat
A Legendary Character Actress of Classic Thai Cinema
Best remembered for her iconic roles as the “strict and villainous mother-in-law.”
- Born: Thursday, 6 September 1923
- Died: 1994
Early Life and Family
Manat Boonyakiat was the eldest daughter of
“Jaew Dokjik” (Chaloem Boonyakiat),
a highly popular comedian and stage performer of the era.
She grew up as the eldest of six siblings and later became the main pillar of her family.
Education
- Began her studies at Phadung Sil School
- Continued at Srijarung School
Manat originally aspired to complete the highest level of education in order to become a teacher.
However, she was forced to leave school prematurely for an unusual reason—
Her beauty.
Entry into the Performing Arts
Her life changed when Mae Luean,
a famous female leading actor of traditional Thai musical theatre (lakhon rong) and the head of her own troupe, noticed young Miss Manat’s striking beauty.
(In that era, women performed both male and female leading roles.)
Mae Luean asked Jaew Dokjik, Manat’s father—who was a close acquaintance—for permission to take her into the troupe. Unable to refuse, he agreed.
From that point onward, Manat was rigorously trained in:
- Acting
- Singing
- Classical dance
by both Mae Luean and her father.
She practiced diligently and quickly became highly skilled.
First Stage Performance
- First performance: The Southern Sea Rose (Kularb Thale Tai)
- Venue: Nakhon Kasem Theatre
- Age: Only 13 years old
From then on, she committed fully to a career in performance.
Dedication and Responsibility
Manat continuously improved her skills by learning from many senior artists.
Despite being looked down upon for “earning a living through dance and performance,” she proved otherwise—using her talents to support her entire family.
After her father’s death, she became the sole provider for her siblings:
- Two younger brothers studied at
- Saint Gabriel’s College
- Wat Bowonniwet School
- Two younger sisters studied at
- Saint Francis School
Notable Siblings
Her younger brother, Pricha Boonyakiat, became a hugely popular and handsome singer of the era.
He tragically died in a car accident in 1961.
Actor Mitr Chaibancha was also in the same vehicle and was severely injured, forcing him to halt film production for several months.
Film Career
As the era of musical theatre declined, Manat transitioned into film acting.
She appeared in hundreds of films, so many that she herself could no longer recall them all.
She was most frequently cast as the mother of the male lead, often portraying stern, domineering, or antagonistic maternal figures who clashed intensely with the heroine.
Selected notable works:
- Island of Desire, Beach of Heaven (1969)
- Sand Castle (1969)
- Wall of Money (1970)
- Monrak Luk Thung (1970)
- Mueang Laplae (television film)
Television and Stage Legacy
One of her most significant later achievements was “Kiatkaew Troupe,”
an all-female musical theatre troupe modeled after the traditional style.
She co-founded the troupe with
Srinuan Kaewbuasai,
another celebrated Thai actress (and grandmother of singer Nanthida Kaewbuasai), whom Manat deeply respected as an elder sister.
- Broadcast on Channel 7 (black-and-white)
- (now Channel 5)
- Aired once a month
- Hugely popular among audiences nationwide
The troupe played an important role in preserving traditional lakhon rong for television audiences.
