One morning in Chiang Mai, a telegram arrives for a former commissioner’s advisor, informing him of the death of Major General Luang Narongraksak Songkram, an old friend he has not seen in a long time. The tragic events of the past resurface in his memories.

The story dates back 30 years earlier, when the advisor had the opportunity to welcome Luang Narong—then Second Lieutenant Phrom Narongraksak—who had been posted to Chiang Mai. Phrom fell in love with a traditional dancer named Khrua Fah, and together they had a child as a symbol of their love. However, an unexpected turn of events occurred when Phrom was suddenly called to serve in Bangkok. For more than two years, Khrua Fah waited day after day for her husband’s return, but received no reply to the letters she sent. During that time, although other men came to ask for her hand in marriage, she remained faithful to him.

One day, the advisor brought news that Phrom was finally returning to Chiang Mai, reviving her long-faded hope and joy. Khrua Fah prepared a meal to welcome him, but was left heartbroken when Phrom—now promoted to Major General Luang Narongraksak Songkram—came only to ask for a separation. He revealed that he had been forced by his father to marry Champa in Bangkok. Having completely forgotten his past, Chiang Mai, Khrua Fah, and even his own child, Phrom left her devastated.

Overwhelmed with grief, Khrua Fah contemplated suicide. She locked herself inside the prayer room, crying uncontrollably while bitterly mocking herself for valuing love more than her own life. She then pressed a knife to her throat. As her body collapsed to the floor, Phrom broke down the door and rushed in, cradling her as she lay dying. With her final breath, Khrua Fah softly entrusted their child to him before passing away forever.
