Synopsis
The Protagonist: The Commoner King The story centers on Chadet (historically known as Bayinnaung), a Burmese Great King who was born a commoner. He was the son of a toddy palm tapper named Lao Chi. However, his destiny changed when the Monk Kusodo recommended his mother to be the royal wet nurse. Because they shared the same milk, Chadet grew up alongside the royal children of Toungoo: Prince Mangtra (Tabinshwehti) and Princess Chantra (Thakin Gyi). Chantra became Chadet's first love and his heart's desire.
The Setting: Three Cities The narrative is driven by politics, war, revenge, and love across three major cities:
"I love Chantra with loyalty, but I love Kusuma with desire."
Despite the large cast of characters spanning a long timeline, the author’s distinct characterization ensures that readers remember even the supporting roles, making the story a cohesive masterpiece.
The Setting: Three Cities The narrative is driven by politics, war, revenge, and love across three major cities:
- Toungoo: Chadet's home. It was built by three close friends:
- Mang Sinthu: A general who ordained as a monk, becoming the Grand Monk Kusodo (Chadet’s teacher).
- Thagaya Odin: A general who became the Palace Minister.
- Meng Kayinyo: A general who became the King of Toungoo (father of Mangtra and Chantra).
- Prome (Pyay): Home to Princess Kusuma, the daughter of King Narabodi. She becomes another one of Chadet's great loves.
- Pegu (Hanthawaddy): Ruled by King Phraya Ram (older brother of the King of Prome). His son is Saw Pinya, served by the villain Khailu. The author, Yakob, famously noted that while a hero like Chadet is easy to create, a purely evil character like Khailu is incredibly difficult to write.
- Similarities: Both are gallant warriors of common birth who are notorious ladies' men.
- Differences:
- Magic vs. Charisma: Khun Phaen relies on magic spells and struggles with his family life. Chadet relies solely on his handsome looks, silver tongue, and charisma to win over women and readers alike.
- Success: While Khun Phaen remains a loyal official, Chadet rises far higher. He marries the King's sister and eventually succeeds Mangtra to become the King of the entire realm.
"I love Chantra with loyalty, but I love Kusuma with desire."
