Synopsis
Princess Tang-on Oradee was the daughter of the King of the Tanuwadee Kingdom. She had a biological brother named Prince Sudchada, and a half-brother born from a concubine named Phra Waiyarat. Phra Waiyarat fell under the dark spell of an evil demon, causing him to commit numerous wicked deeds. He seized the kingdom and demanded to take Princess Tang-on, his half-sister, as his queen. When she refused, she was killed.
Devastated, Prince Sudchada carried Tang-on's lifeless body and fled to a cliff deep in the forest, intending to jump off and end his life to be with his sister. However, the god Indra disguised himself, descended to intervene, and persuaded Prince Sudchada to accept the divine food he offered. Sudchada then fed the food to Princess Tang-on's body, miraculously bringing her back to life.
The siblings then wandered aimlessly until they settled in a small hut on the border of the Kosee Kingdom. Unbeknownst to them, beneath the ground where their hut was built lay the cave of a hibernating Crocodile King. One day, Princess Tang-on accidentally poured boiling rice water onto the ground. The scalding water burned the hibernating Crocodile King, forcing him to emerge from his cave and retreat into a nearby pond. In the process, one of his scales flicked into their rice pot. Prince Sudchada unwittingly ate the rice containing the scale, which transformed him into a crocodile. Before fully turning, he instructed Tang-on to pierce a hairpin into his head so she could always recognize and distinguish which crocodile was her brother.
Meanwhile, Prince Praingam of Kosee was hunting in the forest when he encountered Princess Tang-on. He instantly fell in love, took her as his royal consort, and even brought the crocodile, Prince Sudchada, to be raised in the palace. However, Prince Praingam's other concubines grew deeply jealous of Tang-on. They devised a wicked scheme by tricking Prince Praingam into leaving the palace to capture a white elephant. During his absence, they swapped Tang-on's newborn son with a baby crocodile and falsely accused her of committing adultery with the beast. Enraged upon his return, Prince Praingam banished both Tang-on and the crocodile Prince Sudchada from the kingdom.
Indra then instructed Tang-on to practice asceticism to help Prince Sudchada regain his human form. As for Tang-on's infant son, who had been taken to be buried alive, he was saved by a tree nymph who named him Ketthipbadee. When Ketthipbadee grew up, he returned to the Kosee Kingdom and revealed the entire truth. The wicked concubines were consequently exiled. Prince Praingam and Ketthipbadee then set out to find Tang-on to reconcile with her. However, on their journey back to the city, Tang-on was abducted by a Giant King (Phaya Yak).
In the Giant's kingdom, a mystical girl was born from a lotus flower, whom the Giant King named Pathumwadee. Princess Pathumwadee became so close to Tang-on that she called her 'mother', which greatly angered the Giant King's queen, who plotted to harm Tang-on. Fortunately, Prince Praingam and Ketthipbadee arrived in time to rescue them, bringing both Tang-on and Pathumwadee back to the Kosee Kingdom. On their way, they encountered Phra Waiyarat, who had finally broken free from the dark spell and fled from Tanuwadee. The evil demon chased after him but was slain by Ketthipbadee. Phra Waiyarat offered to return the throne to Prince Sudchada, but Sudchada had already let go of worldly desires and chose to ordain as a monk to seek the Dharma. Meanwhile, Princess Tang-on was finally reunited and lived happily ever after with her son and her husband.
