Synopsis
Kongkai (Patchata Nampan), a playboy socialite who has lived a reckless life, is utterly shocked when his mother, Khunying Pavan (Duangta Tungkamanee), the executive chairwoman of PV Real Estate, forces him to marry Arunprapai (Araya A. Hargate). Arunprapai is the daughter of former district chief Arun and Mrs. Prapai (Penpak Sirikul), who saved Khunying Pavan’s life when Kongkai’s father committed suicide over twenty years ago. Kongkai cannot accept this because he firmly believes he loves Prungchat (Pornchita Na Songkhla), a hot model and the youngest daughter of Mr. Prakob (Krit Atthaseri) and Khun Nuethip (Passorn Boonyakiart). They are the company's second-largest shareholders, right after Khunying Pavan. However, Khunying Pavan knows that Prungchat’s involvement is a ploy by Mr. Prakob to consolidate shares, make himself executive chairman, and push his son Narong (Nithi Samutkhojon) into the vice president position. Khunying Pavan is determined to stop this because PV Real Estate is her life's work, intended as Kongkai’s inheritance.
Khunying Pavan is worried about Kongkai, who continues to act like a reckless womanizer. Knowing she has severe, terminal cancer, she keeps her illness a secret for business reasons and begins planning her son's future. She wants Kongkai to marry a good woman—not a party girl like Prungchat—to help straighten out his life, and Arunprapai is her chosen candidate.
Kongkai doesn't believe any decent woman would agree to marry a stranger. He assumes Arunprapai is just money-hungry and shameless. Discovering she is from the provinces and holds a degree in home economics makes him look down on her even more without having met her, believing she lacks dignity and is only marrying for wealth.
Determined to dig up her flaws and cancel the wedding, Kongkai learns that Arunprapai recently broke up with Phuchong (Pisanu Nimsakul), a deputy district chief she had been dating for years, because Phuchong had to take responsibility for impregnating another woman, Ben (Waranlak Sirimaneewattana). To the cynical Kongkai, this proves Arunprapai is not the pure, innocent woman his mother thinks she is.
Kongkai’s rebellious behavior causes Khunying Pavan so much stress that Khun Thongthom (Anan Bunnag), the family lawyer, steps in. He urges Kongkai to think of the mother who raised him alone and subtly hints at her failing health. Even without fully understanding the hints, Kongkai’s love for his devoted, widowed mother convinces him to agree to the wedding.
As the wedding day approaches, Arunprapai is filled with hesitation. Deep down, she knows she agreed to the marriage to escape Phuchong's attempts to reconcile and to avoid being branded a homewrecker. Furthermore, she knows about Khunying Pavan's illness and sympathizes with her. Even though she is tying her life to a stranger without love, her heartbreak has made her lose faith in romance. Pushed by the gossip and false accusations from Phuchong's wife, Arunprapai decides to go through with the wedding, choosing to face whatever lies ahead.
Despite Kongkai's cold, indifferent attitude, the wedding takes place. Seeing his bride for the first time, Kongkai is stunned by her beauty, which only deepens his suspicion as to why such a flawless woman would marry without love. Seeing Phuchong reluctantly congratulating the bride makes Kongkai even more contemptuous. He treats her with freezing indifference, as if she doesn't exist, to punish her for selling her soul for a marriage without dignity.
Beginning their married life, Kongkai finds Arunprapai to be the complete opposite of his usual type—so much so that he can't believe his own mother picked her. To him, she is plain, uncharming, boring, and utterly unarousing. Because of this, he sleeps in a separate room and refuses to touch her, which greatly relieves Arunprapai. Despite preparing herself for marital duties, she happily focuses on taking flawless care of the household and everyone's meals. Gradually, her meticulous care and attention to detail seep into Kongkai's life, becoming an inseparable part of his daily routine.
Meanwhile, Prungchat is immediately summoned back from abroad by Mr. Prakob after Kongkai's wedding. She is physically abused by her father, who blames her for losing Kongkai and the business opportunity. Though society sees her as the legitimate daughter of Prakob and Nuethip, at home, Prungchat is treated like a servant—a child of Prakob's secret mistress. Since childhood, she has had to serve her half-brother, Narong, who even sexually abused her when she became a teenager. Denied justice, she lives like a slave.
This oppression drives Prungchat to make herself important, leading to her successful modeling career. Her sex appeal attracted Kongkai, and her father ordered her to secure him to finally escape her miserable home life. Because Kongkai has everything and seemed infatuated with her, Prungchat became determined to marry him.
Kongkai's marriage shatters Prungchat's hopes. Furious that Khunying Pavan orchestrated this to block her, Prungchat becomes emboldened when Kongkai continues seeing her to spite Arunprapai. Prungchat tries every method to flaunt her importance to Kongkai in front of Arunprapai, using insulting words and even leaking intimate photos of them online to publicly humiliate Arunprapai into a divorce. However, Arunprapai never shows anger or cares. Instead, Prungchat loses her temper, constantly trying to harass Arunprapai. Khunying Pavan has the veteran maid, Chalaem (Pisamai Wilaisak), fend Prungchat off. Because Arunprapai never reacts, Kongkai begins to think she is just a cold, emotionless nun toward all men.
However, when Phuchong comes to visit, Arunprapai treats him with a sweetness that sharply contrasts with the coldness she shows Kongkai. This bruises Kongkai’s playboy ego. Feeling invisible, he decides to conquer Arunprapai and make her fall in love with him. Unfazed, Arunprapai simply continues her duties. She organizes his messy life, and Khunying Pavan is delighted to see her son slowly improving. Kongkai doesn't even realize he's changing; he's too busy playing mind games to make Arunprapai fall for him, unknowingly chasing after her himself. Khunying Pavan and Khun Thongthom watch this unfold with satisfaction.
Prungchat publicly declares herself Kongkai’s true wife, claiming that even without a ceremony, she is the one he loves and lives with. She becomes intensely jealous, harassing any woman who comes near Kongkai, even fighting women at his workplace. Khunying Pavan issues an ultimatum for Kongkai to handle the mess, and he starts growing exhausted and annoyed by Prungchat's drama.
Noticing Kongkai is increasingly obsessed with Arunprapai, Prungchat feels she is losing him. She steps up her game, acting like the lady of the house and ignoring Khunying Pavan's glares. When Kongkai has to go to Japan for a business meeting, Prungchat insists on tagging along. Khunying Pavan reprimands him. Tired of the love triangle headaches, Kongkai asks Arunprapai for a divorce. She calmly agrees but says he must be the one to tell his mother—making Kongkai realize a divorce won't be easy.
Phuchong, now working at the ministry, visits Arunprapai often. He reveals he has separated from his wife after a miscarriage and asks Arunprapai for another chance. Kongkai assumes Arunprapai is ready to run back to her ex. Disgusted that she would lower herself to be a mistress rather than his legal wife, he goes to his mother to demand the divorce. Khunying Pavan declares that if he divorces Arunprapai, he must compensate her with at least 5 million baht from his own assets. Kongkai is furious at the thought of paying her a dime, especially knowing they haven't even consummated the marriage.
Khunying Pavan gives him a deadline to finalize the divorce before his provincial business trip; otherwise, she will handle it and double the compensation he owes. Feeling bitter about losing so heavily to Arunprapai, Kongkai decides the night before his trip to "get his money's worth" by fully claiming Arunprapai as his wife in every sense.
The sweetness he takes from Arunprapai haunts Kongkai's mind. Even with Prungchat by his side, he can't stop thinking about his wife. Though he tries to convince himself that Arunprapai is just a house cook and not fit for high society like Prungchat, his perspective shifts when he runs into Arunprapai working at an international food festival. He discovers she isn't just a maid, but a top food stylist for a leading culinary magazine. Seeing her professionalism and hearing the admiration of other men makes Kongkai insanely jealous. He publicly asserts his position as her husband, completely ignoring a furious Prungchat, and hovers protectively around Arunprapai. Prungchat is suspicious of his constant need to slip away, forcing Khun Thongthom to make excuses to separate Prungchat so Kongkai can be with his wife.
Returning home, Kongkai sticks to Arunprapai like glue, and their bond deepens. However, Prungchat still finds ways to manipulate the hot-tempered, gullible Kongkai into picking fights with Arunprapai.
Between the wedded wife, Arunprapai, and the mistress, Prungchat, how will the battle unfold? And who will Kongkai ultimately choose to be the true mother of his children? Watch "Mia Taeng" (The Wedded Wife) every Monday and Tuesday at 8:30 PM on Thai TV Color Channel 3. The first episode premieres Monday, July 18, 2011.
