Synopsis
Hua Jai Rak Kham Phop is a fantasy romance about a love that crosses time, connecting the fall of Ayutthaya in 2310 BE (1767 CE) with the modern world of 2009.
In the year 2310, on the border between Chachoengsao and Chonburi, Mae Luk Chan, a 17-year-old orphaned daughter of Mr. Boonma, a military commander in the Thai-Burmese war, is sent away from Ayutthaya by her father just a few days before the kingdom falls. He sends her to marry Khun Krai, a soldier serving under Phraya Phichai Dab Hak. But while the bridal procession is traveling to the wedding, bandits attack, looting the procession and killing the soldiers escorting it. Mae Luk Chan and her nursemaid Mae Nom Aum flee desperately for their lives.
Then the story abruptly cuts to 2009, at a movie studio in the Town in Town area, where a period film is being shot. An actor playing a soldier reports to the Dark King, but when he mispronounces his line, the sound of “Cut!” rings out. Golf, the assistant director, storms in and scolds him. Then Mark, a young, handsome, hotshot director with a strong reputation, steps in to handle things himself.
Mark is a commercially successful filmmaker whose debut film made him famous. At the same time, reporters are interviewing Pat, the leading actress, who keeps glancing at Mark. She tells the press that she and Mark are romantically involved. Later, Pat calls Mark to invite him to a costume party hosted by Tom, the owner of Rainbow Film, where Mae Noi, another important figure in the company, seems especially fond of Mark.
The next morning, an alarm clock goes off. Half-awake, Mark nudges Chan and asks her to hand it to him. She sleepily does so — and then both suddenly realize what has happened. They stare at each other and scream. Both are horrified, especially Mae Luk Chan, who finds herself in a strange place, in bed with a strange man. She wails that the honor of a Siamese woman has been ruined. Mark, meanwhile, assumes she must be some ambitious girl from the costume party trying to become famous the easy way.
When Mark has to meet a client at a shopping mall, he drags Chan along so he can get rid of her somewhere. The drive is chaotic because Mae Luk Chan panics at everything she sees, gets carsick, and vomits. Mark finally dumps her at the mall with 2,000 baht, telling her to buy something to eat and take a taxi home, while he heads off into the mall. Left alone, Mae Luk Chan is overwhelmed and believes she must be in heaven.
Mark eventually gives Luk Chan a modern makeover: her teeth are fixed, her figure becomes sleek and fit, her skin glows, and although her expressions, mannerisms, and speech remain old-fashioned, this only makes her beauty even more distinctive. With a look that blends ancient grace and modern style, she seems like a timeless oriental beauty, almost like an international model. Mark begins to feel excited, as though he has discovered a dazzling new star whom society will be astonished by.
Meanwhile, as Mark’s latest film approaches the end of shooting, a scandalous clip involving Pat and Chit is leaked, and every newspaper begins sensationalizing it. The production is forced to pause immediately. Tom, who secretly has feelings for Chan, proposes a solution: rewrite the script so that Chan becomes the film’s lead actress, while Pat is demoted to a supporting role. Pat loses everything and blames Chan for it all.
The film is eventually completed and released. Chan, playing a woman from the old era, delivers such a perfect performance that she becomes an overnight sensation. Tom throws a celebration party at his house, and everyone enjoys the success. Mark watches Chan on stage being interviewed, filled with admiration for how far she has come.
After that night, Mark begins searching for a way to return to the past. One evening, the two of them finally discover how they can travel back in time. Together, they draw the lightning-struck sword from its sheath, and successfully journey back to the past. There, they fight together in the war and help secure victory. Amid the turmoil of battle, Mark and Luk Chan fall in love.
At a critical moment, Mark raises his sword to protect Luk Chan, thunder crashes, and the last image they see is Khun Krai smiling at them. It becomes clear that Khun Krai made his decision because he wanted Mark to escape from that terrible war.
Mark then returns to the present day.
As time passes, Mark and Luk Chan stand together in a museum, looking at the exhibit of King Taksin, seeing the bravery of her father and of Phraya Phichai, and realizing that history itself has changed. The two of them have now been written into history, recorded in the cross-world chronicle.
