Synopsis
Setthi Khang Khiang is a comedy-drama about ambition, love, and the dream of rising from poverty, all set amid the bustling world of braised duck stalls and neighborhood rivalry.
Ah Pae dreams of building a legend of wealth with his own two hands, so he flees to Thailand with his handsome grandson Kim. But their old acquaintance Uncle Huay steals their money and abandons them, leaving behind both his own blood relative and a mountain of gambling debt. With nowhere else to go, Kim has to seek refuge with Luang Ta, a monk.
Every morning, while helping Luang Ta on his alms round, Kim passes by the braised duck shop of Ta Perm and Mae Salee, who have a beautiful daughter named Chonthong. Kim falls for Chonthong at first sight. But because he is poor, he becomes determined to erase the insults and scorn he receives from Ta Perm and Mae Salee.
Ah Pae then passes on his secret braised duck recipe, and Kim joins forces with Laan to save enough money to open a duck shop of their own nearby. Unfortunately, this only makes Chonthong furious, because Kim’s new shop ends up stealing customers from her family’s business.
Chonthong’s beauty catches the eye of Itthiphon, the heir of a local godfather, who offers the family a loan to renovate their shop. Ta Perm and Mae Salee eagerly accept, hoping to make Itthiphon their son-in-law. Chonthong blames Kim for causing her family to fall into debt. Kim tries to win her forgiveness, but is blocked by Podduang, Chonthong’s tomboy best friend. When Laan comes to help Kim, he ends up getting punched by Podduang too.
Meanwhile, Thongthae, one of Itthiphon’s subordinates, feels sympathy for Susie, and Susie uses him as a spy to keep tabs on Itthiphon and Chonthong. Then Jae Nat, the owner of a café, spots Chonthong and invites her to become a singer. Susie becomes furious that Chonthong is stealing the spotlight and tries to bully her, only for Podduang to punch back in defense. Susie, bruised and humiliated, goes running to Itthiphon for comfort, but meets Thongthae first instead. That night, under the influence of alcohol, she ends up sleeping with him.
At the same time, Thongthae lures Itthiphon into gambling and helps the casino owner cheat him, leaving Itthiphon buried in debt. To recover the money, Itthiphon begins aggressively collecting loans from villagers, using his younger sister Yajai as the public face. Yajai nearly gets mobbed by angry villagers but is saved by Punglo, a temple boy. Kim and Laan encourage their friend to court Yajai, so Punglo goes to work as a gardener at her house.
Then comes the temple fair, where Chonthong and Kim set up rival stalls and compete against each other directly. As Chonthong and Kim grow closer again, Itthiphon becomes jealous and deliberately announces that Kim’s stall is serving food for free, creating complete chaos for Kim’s business.
So how will Kim solve this disaster — and will he be able to win Chonthong’s heart?
Find out in “Setthi Khang Khiang” (The Millionaire by the Chopping Block), a comedy series filled with laughter, romance, and lessons in the philosophy of sufficiency economy, set in the middle of a battlefield of duck chopping boards and market rivalry.
The drama aired every Monday to Friday from 7:00–8:00 PM on Thai TV Channel 3, beginning with its first episode on Thursday, April 29, 2010.
