Synopsis
In the kingdom of Kaew Kao, King Phatthiphong expanded his territory through high-stakes gambling, using cockfighting and fish fighting to wager entire cities. He had Sri Sajja as his right-hand queen and Soi Sawan as his left-hand queen. The two queens harbored deep jealousy toward one another, and both remained without an heir.
After winning the city of Panjala in a cockfighting wager, King Phatthiphong held a sacred ritual on the day of a solar eclipse to pray to the deities for a child. He also made merit to dedicate to the vengeful spirits of the animals that had suffered and died in his city-betting games. All of these events were closely observed with great interest by the Grasshopper King, or Lord Tak.
The two queens eventually gave birth to sons around the exact same time. Queen Sri Sajja gave birth to an adorable baby boy, while Queen Soi Sawan gave birth to a doll-like child (Kumarn Tukta). Instead of feeling maternal love, she absolutely despised it. Fearing that King Phatthiphong would lose his affection for her, and incited by the Grasshopper King's whispers, Soi Sawan decided to secretly swap her doll-child with Queen Sri Sajja's healthy son. Thus, chaos erupted in the kingdom of Kaew Kao.
King Phatthiphong wished to know whether this bizarre doll-child was a being of great merit or a cursed omen (Kalakini), so he ordered the Chief Astrologer to read the child's destiny. Upon examining the astrological chart, the old astrologer clearly saw that hidden within the doll-child was a handsome young boy destined for great power and fortune. However, Queen Soi Sawan had heavily bribed the astrologer's beloved wife, Montha, pressuring the old man to falsely prophesize that the doll-child was a cursed omen possessed by an evil spirit. The astrologer falsely declared that Queen Sri Sajja and the doll-child must be banished from the kingdom of Kaew Kao within seven days to save the city.
