“Por Malai Rim Tang (Garland Man by the Roadside)” is a story that blends tradition, family expectations, and the pursuit of dreams.
The story centers around the Sor. Phadungsak Luk Chao Phraya Boxing Camp, an old Muay Thai camp located along the Chao Phraya River. It was founded during the reign of King Rama VII by Khun Phadungsak, a government official. Generations later, the camp is run by Sermsuk, along with his children Sermchat and Suthinee. Sermsuk hopes that his son Sermchat will inherit and continue the legacy of the boxing camp.
However, Sermchat disappoints his father. Unlike a typical heir to a boxing camp, he is physically delicate and gentle. In contrast, his sister Suthinee is strong, tomboyish, and passionate about boxing. Sermchat’s true passion lies in the arts—singing, dancing, and performance. He often secretly rows across the river to watch and train with the Pornnaparat Likay Troupe, learning traditional Thai musical theatre.
As time passes, the boxing camp falls into financial hardship, forcing Sermsuk to mortgage their rice fields to Kamnan Cha-um. Meanwhile, at the likay troupe led by Tuaythep, new visitors arrive: Thamrong, Lalita, and their daughter Rujirang, who suffered a horse-riding accident that caused temporary memory loss. Because of her condition, Rujirang becomes irritable and easily angered, often lashing out at those around her—especially Netdara, a self-centered young likay actress.
One day, while secretly watching rehearsals, Sermchat meets Rujirang sitting alone by a riverside pavilion. Struck by her beauty, he expresses his admiration through improvised likay verses. At first, she reacts with annoyance, but his playful poetic teasing gradually calms her down.
Rujirang then asks Sermchat to help record videos of her singing and performing traditional Thai music and dance. She hopes that one day, when her memory returns, these recordings will help her remember who she once was.
