Once upon a time, in a village long ago, there lived a wealthy man named Taraka (pronounced Ta-ra-ka), who made his living as a fisherman. He had two wives.
His first wife, Khanittha, was kind and gentle. She had a beautiful and well-mannered daughter named Euy, who took after her mother.
His second wife, Khanitthi, was jealous, spiteful, and manipulative. She constantly incited her husband to hate Khanittha and her daughter. She had two daughters who were just like her, named Ai and Ee.
One day, Taraka took Khanittha fishing in a canal. No matter how many times they cast their net, they caught only a single golden goby fish that was pregnant. As evening fell, Taraka decided to take the fish home. However, Khanittha felt pity for it and begged him to release it.
Already harboring resentment, Taraka became furious. He grabbed an oar and struck Khanittha until she lost consciousness, then pushed her into the water, where she drowned.
When he returned home, Euy asked about her mother. Taraka lied, saying that her mother had run away with another man and would never return.
