Synopsis

During the reign of King Rama V, around Buddhist Era 2450 (Rattanakosin Era 126), at the household of Phraya Wisut—a nobleman renowned for both his handsome appearance and immense wealth in rank and property—he governed hundreds of slaves. Among them was Juan, an eighteen-year-old girl, the daughter of slaves Som and Mee, famous for her beauty. Khun Raya, the wife of Phraya Wisut, was displeased because she knew that her husband secretly desired Juan. Moreover, Khun Raya herself had no heir. She therefore tried to prevent Juan from entering the main house, claiming that Som and Mee were old and ill, and that Juan should stay to take care of them. She gave Juan money to take her parents to see a doctor, leaving Juan deeply grateful for her kindness.
Beneath her kind façade, however, no one knew that Khun Raya hid a cruel nature. She secretly plotted to eliminate Juan by manipulating Thongkliao, Phraya Wisut’s second wife, who was jealous and hot-tempered. Khun Raya hinted that the money Juan had been spending comfortably came from Phraya Wisut. Upon hearing this, Thongkliao became furious, believing he favored Juan. Even though Juan denied it, Thongkliao refused to listen. Khun Raya then comforted Juan, telling her not to take Thongkliao seriously, gaining even more of Juan’s trust.
Khun Raya was pleased that neither Thongkliao nor Juan suspected her. Whenever they had grievances, they confided in her, and she used the opportunity to subtly incite conflict between them while maintaining the image of a kind elder.
Juan was in love with a slave named Boon, and her close friend was Im, a girl of similar age, who was in a relationship with a young man named Ying. Both Juan and Im dreamed of living happily with the ones they loved.
One day, Phraya Wisut encountered Im by a stream and, overcome with desire, forced himself upon her. Im was devastated and tried to hide the truth, fearing Ying would find out. However, Phraya Wisut eventually took responsibility and made Im his third wife. Im was heartbroken that she had lost her purity and could not live with Ying as she had dreamed. Juan increasingly saw Phraya Wisut as cruel and lustful.
Both Khun Raya and Thongkliao were furious that Im had been elevated to wife status. Thongkliao openly caused a scene, while Khun Raya quietly accepted Im outwardly, though she wept in secret. She resented her husband’s betrayal, especially since she was of noble birth, unlike Thongkliao and Im, who were of lower status.
Khun Raya again plotted to eliminate Im, using Thongkliao as a pawn. Through her trusted servant Yai Thong, she spread rumors that Phraya Wisut was deeply infatuated with Im. Thongkliao, easily provoked, believed everything and attacked Im while she was three months pregnant. Juan tried to help but was beaten unconscious as well.
When Phraya Wisut returned, he punished Thongkliao severely and demoted her back to slavery. Realizing she had been manipulated, Thongkliao tried to warn Juan and Im about Khun Raya, but neither believed her.
Khun Raya then turned against Thongkliao, orchestrating her downfall through Im by poisoning her pregnancy medicine and blaming Thongkliao. As a result, Thongkliao was brutally punished and eventually went insane.
Meanwhile, Phraya Wisut continued to pursue Juan and attempted to assault her, but Boon intervened. Still, Phraya Wisut vowed he would eventually win her over.
Khun Raya, deeply hurt, manipulated Im by suggesting that Juan would replace her. Though Im initially refused to act against her friend, circumstances forced her into a difficult position when Juan’s parents and many others died of disease. Under pressure, Juan was ultimately tricked into a situation where Phraya Wisut violated her, and Khun Raya deceived her into believing Im had orchestrated it.
This misunderstanding destroyed Juan and Im’s friendship. Juan grew resentful and eventually became pregnant. Khun Raya, unable to tolerate both women bearing children, plotted again—this time poisoning them. Juan alone consumed the poison, resulting in a miscarriage. Believing Im was responsible, Phraya Wisut cast Im out.
As resentment deepened, Boon chose to live with Im, further fueling Juan’s anger. Khun Raya, satisfied with Im’s downfall, turned her attention to eliminating Juan. Eventually, through another scheme involving poison and false evidence, Juan was accused of harming another wife, Khun Pring, and was beaten to death. Before dying, Juan swore vengeance.
At that moment, Juan’s spirit entered Khun Raya’s womb, and she was reborn as Nu-Yim.
Years later, after the abolition of slavery during King Rama V’s reign, the children grew up in a changing society. Nu-Yim, however, was temperamental and filled with unexplained hatred—especially toward Phraya Wisut and Im.
As she matured, memories of her past life as Juan resurfaced. Believing she had been betrayed by Im, Nu-Yim sought revenge, causing suffering to those around her. However, as truths gradually came to light, it became evident that Khun Raya had been the true manipulator behind all the tragedies.
During World War II, chaos and hardship struck. With the men away at war, the household suffered. Eventually, the truth was fully revealed—Khun Raya had orchestrated nearly all the suffering.
Nu-Yim was torn between hatred from her past life and love for Khun Raya, who was now her mother. In the end, guided by compassion and the teachings of forgiveness, she chose to save Khun Raya despite everything.
Khun Raya survived but was severely disabled and lived the rest of her life in suffering, seeking forgiveness from those she had wronged. Phraya Wisut, however, died in a bombing.
Nu-Yim eventually chose a spiritual path, becoming a nun to seek peace and atone for past karma. She let go of vengeance, understanding that true peace comes not from revenge, but from forgiveness.
The story concludes with reconciliation, love, and the realization that hatred only perpetuates suffering, while forgiveness brings true liberation.
