Synopsis
Mr. Phumdee, a wealthy master’s degree student with a solid B+ academic record, has always had dolls as his companions. He decides to base his thesis on the question: “Why do children, from a young age through adolescence, love dolls of all kinds?” He also wonders whether their experiences are similar to his own bond with his beloved doll.
To find answers, he experiments with various methods—gaining support from academics, parents, and guardians, who even offer their homes and land as research spaces.
Thus begins the idea of the “Grade B House Theory”—a concept where children live together and take care of one another through a “senior-junior” system during the long school break. Participants can stay for 10, 20, or 30 days, with the option to temporarily return home, as long as they complete the full duration.
Applications are opened to a limited number of secondary school students, especially those active in extracurricular activities. Those with camp training certificates are given priority. This group becomes the “seniors,” while some bold volunteers—known as the “brave hearts”—join under special conditions.
A key requirement is that every child must bring their favorite doll. Those who can share unique stories or personal insights about living with their dolls have a higher chance of being selected.
From Phumdee’s research across various age groups, he discovers that dolls influence children in many ways—including emotional expression, imagination, and companionship. Dolls can act as friends, confidants, siblings, or even extensions of one’s imagination.
This leads to deeper questions:
Are dolls simply objects, or are they vessels of human emotional energy passed down across generations?
Do children project their inner thoughts onto dolls, using them as a medium?
Phumdee theorizes that dolls may symbolize a form of belief—that they help unlock imagination in countless ways, or perhaps it is the human mind itself directing these experiences, with dolls acting as the channel.
The selected participants—around 7–10 early secondary school students—are allowed to stay in the Grade B House with written parental consent and no strict conditions. They may withdraw at any time if they feel uncomfortable or homesick. However, during the program, communication with family is restricted unless permitted by staff.
To ensure safety and comfort, the Grade B House is fully supported:
