Synopsis
The story begins when Bua Phan invites her close friend Thongmee to eat a strange egg she found by the Mekong River. Thongmee refuses, but Bua Phan eats it and suddenly becomes overwhelmingly thirsty. She jumps into a boat and rushes into the middle of the river to drink more water.
Thongmee cries for help, and Thid Ken pulls Bua Phan out of the river. But she violently lashes out, claiming she is not Bua Phan before dragging him down into the water with her. The villagers, led by old Chiang La, pray to the sacred Buddha image for their safety. Thid Ken survives and tells everyone that Bua Phan has been taken to an underwater city.
Dr. Akkhanee, a psychiatrist researching community mental health, arrives in the village. He joins a spirit-medium ritual led by a medium named Khamphaeng, hoping to learn Bua Phan’s fate. Meanwhile, Dr. Oon-ngern—who is married to Princess Khamkham, Akkhanee’s former love—and Prince Worawong, her brother, invite Akkhanee to inspect a collapsed family stupa.
Worawong, still resentful, attempts to kill Akkhanee for “abandoning” his sister, though Akkhanee only ever saw her as a younger sibling. Together with Oon-ngern, Worawong poisons Akkhanee and throws him into the Mekong River.
There, Akkhanee encounters the Crocodile-Headed Serpent King and Chao Mae Thor Huk, a powerful spirit of the Mekong River. She reveals that she abducted Bua Phan out of revenge—in a past life, Bua Phan and Akkhanee loved each other even though Akkhanee was destined to be her consort. She tries to imprison Akkhanee as well, but he escapes, unable to remember their past.
Back on land, Bua Phan’s mother Boonruen is devastated by her daughter’s disappearance, while Luang Pho Joom, her husband, has become a monk. Soon, Bua Phan returns—but under the spell of Chao Mae Thor Huk, who wants everyone, including Akkhanee, to believe she is a ghost so he will abandon her. Akkhanee refuses to believe it and seeks the truth.
Enraged, Chao Mae Thor Huk unleashes terror—killing villagers and abducting innocent women as sacrifices, framing Bua Phan for the crimes. The villagers attempt to burn Bua Phan alive, but Akkhanee intervenes.
The spirit drags Bua Phan back underwater and forces her to drink her blood, turning her into a half-human, half-spirit being. Possessed and violent, Bua Phan returns and continues killing, including Prince Worawong, who tries to steal treasures from the stupa.
Chao Mae Thor Huk orders Bua Phan to capture Champa, the final sacrifice needed for immortality. However, Akkhanee manages to subdue Bua Phan with a sacred necklace, breaking her power. He then descends into the underwater realm to rescue Champa and discovers the truth—that Chao Mae Thor Huk herself is the true Mekong spirit behind everything.
Akkhanee returns to the surface and joins Luang Pho Joom and the villagers in prayer. On the full moon of the tenth lunar month, when the gate between worlds opens, Chao Mae Thor Huk prepares her final ritual. But the spirits of her victims—released by the Lord of the Dead—rise up to help the humans. Together, they defeat her, and the underwater city collapses.
Twenty years later, Akkhanee and Bua Phan are married and have a daughter named Bai Bua, who looks exactly like her mother. Bai Bua travels to Nakhon Phanom to visit Boonruen and wanders by the riverbank—where she discovers a large mysterious egg.
Unbeknownst to her, every movement is being watched… by the malevolent gaze of Chao Mae Thor Huk, the Mekong spirit who may never truly be destroyed.
