Synopsis
In an era when the country was heavily influenced by Western culture, many forms of Thai art began to disappear—including the Mahori ensemble of Phraya Phichai Decha, a nobleman who preserved traditional Thai music. The authorities ordered the dissolution of his ensemble, forcing him to send Mr. Phuang, Mae Phian (the band leaders), and the musicians back to Pak Nam Pho.
Before leaving, Pikul, Mr. Phuang’s daughter, developed a romantic relationship with Khun Rach, the only son of Phraya Phichai Decha, who was known for being flirtatious and unreliable. Similarly, Sin, the gong player in the ensemble, secretly loved Pikul. Meanwhile, Euy, the daughter of Mae Sud, was in love with Sin.
Tired of Khun Rach’s womanizing behavior, Phraya Phichai Decha arranged a marriage for him with Saraphi, the eldest daughter of Jek Phong. Upon learning this, Khun Rach had his loyal servant Mud help him escape to Mr. Phuang’s house. He lied to Mr. Phuang, claiming his father had sent him there to study music. In truth, Khun Rach wanted to win Pikul’s heart—even swearing that if he ever stopped loving her, he would be struck dead by lightning.
Knowing that Sin secretly loved Pikul, Khun Rach mocked him by asking to play the gong in his place. Sin’s close friends, Am and On, were displeased by this.
