Synopsis
Ah Liang had a wife named Mei Ling and two young sons, Ah Tian and Andy. He traveled from Shantou to Thailand by junk boat with two friends, Ah Jua and Long Ju Bun, hoping to build a better life.
Ah Liang started with a small business, gradually expanding it into something bigger. He later remarried a Thai woman named Niam, who gave up her dream of pursuing a university education to marry him. Together, they had several children, with their eldest son named Nattakit.
Later, Mei Ling and her children traveled to Thailand in search of Ah Liang, causing turmoil within the family. At the same time, the family business continued to grow, experiencing both successes and failures.
Ah Liang remained steadfast in his principles and diligence, guided by the Chinese character “Nghee” (义), meaning righteousness, which he placed prominently in the center of the house as a constant reminder.
As the years passed, the children and grandchildren of Ah Liang, Mei Ling, and Niam grew up. Many helped expand the business successfully—especially Andy, the second son—while Ah Tian, the eldest, struggled and failed in most of his endeavors.
Meanwhile, Ah Liang’s grandchildren each developed distinct personalities. Among them, Chanchai, the only son of Andy and his Hong Kong wife Peggy (daughter of Roger Fai, a wealthy shipping tycoon), was raised spoiled from a young age. In the end, he caused great damage to the family business and tarnished the family’s reputation during Ah Liang’s later years.
All of these events are narrated by Napa, Ah Liang’s grandson—the son of Nop, Ah Liang’s second son with Niam.
