Synopsis
Netdao, a young woman from Northern Thailand, is raised by her grandmother, Mae Thao Boon. She only knows that her mother, Khamfa, died after jumping off Wang Buaban cliff, heartbroken after being deceived by a man from Bangkok.
Netdao later meets Phakphum, the grandson of Por Long, who visits her village. She learns that he is the son of Buaroy, Khamfa’s close friend. Together, Netdao and Phakphum help villagers who are being exploited by middlemen buying wooden furniture at unfair prices, leading to conflict with Chalermchai, an influential trader in the village. When Chalermchai accidentally calls Netdao “Khamfa,” she begins to suspect he is somehow connected to her past and her mother.
As Mae Thao Boon falls ill, Phakphum offers help, but Netdao refuses out of concern for gossip in the village, distancing herself until he eventually returns to Bangkok—though not before secretly taking her photograph. He later shows the furniture designs to Karun, a factory owner, hoping to support the villagers. Upon seeing Netdao’s photo, Karun is stunned and insists on meeting her. His wife, Khomkhai, grows suspicious.
Karun reveals himself as Netdao’s father, but she refuses to accept him. Mae Thao Boon then tells the truth: Karun once helped Khamfa escape a forced marriage to Chalermchai and took her to Bangkok. However, Khamfa later returned to the village, pregnant and heartbroken, and gave birth at Wang Buaban cliff. Shunned by villagers and emotionally broken, Khamfa eventually left her baby at a temple during a holy day before taking her own life.
After Mae Thao Boon dies, Netdao is left alone. Determined to pursue a better future, she moves to Bangkok to live with Karun and continue her education—sparking hostility from Khomkhai and her daughters, Paksinee and Siriyupa. Netdao must endure constant mistreatment from them, as well as from Mali, a maid in the house.
Phakphum introduces Netdao to Buaroy and an elder relative, Ya Phongsiri. While Buaroy shows kindness, Phongsiri despises Netdao, believing she will be like her mother. Meanwhile, Paksinee and Siriyupa plot against Netdao, but their schemes sometimes backfire. Suriyont, a man who becomes interested in Netdao, gets caught up in these conflicts.
Siriyupa frames Netdao for theft, leading Karun to scold her, causing deep disappointment. To support herself, Netdao plays the seung (a traditional Northern instrument) at Suriyont’s hotel. Meanwhile, Chalermchai rekindles an affair with Khomkhai. When Netdao discovers them, Khomkhai fears exposure and has Chalermchai abduct Netdao to a motel, but Phakphum rescues her in time.
Karun later suffers a devastating blow when a cargo ship explosion leaves him paralyzed from shock. Khomkhai takes advantage of the situation, trying to stop Netdao’s education, but Netdao perseveres and supports herself. Paksinee and Siriyupa continue trying to destroy her, eventually getting her expelled from university.
Tensions peak when Khomkhai, enraged that Karun sides with Netdao, attacks him and throws both of them out of the house. Phakphum takes them in. Khomkhai then attempts to install Chalermchai to run Karun’s business, but Phakphum blocks her, claiming authority as appointed by Karun.
As Netdao and Phakphum grow closer, she begins to develop feelings for him, angering Paksinee, who demands he choose between them. He makes it clear he only sees her as a sister. In revenge, Paksinee sneaks into the factory and burns Netdao’s seung, causing a fire that traps Khomkhai inside. Despite everything, Netdao risks her life to save her, while Phakphum runs into the flames to retrieve Netdao’s instrument, winning back her trust.
After overcoming countless hardships, Netdao graduates and helps manage the factory, with Phakphum by her side. They eventually decide to build a life together. However, their journey is far from over, as more obstacles and separations await.
Will Netdao share the same tragic fate as her mother? And can the sound of the seung create a miracle?
Follow her story in Waew Siang Seung (“The Sound of the Seung”).
