Synopsis
Set in 2005, Living with Grandpa tells the story of Yok, a 60-year-old man who has achieved great success as a writer, with many published works. In the present day, he lives with his large, loving family, surrounded by children and grandchildren. Whenever he looks at this warm family life, Yok often reflects on his childhood—when it was just him and his grandfather.
His grandfather, an elderly Chinese man who immigrated to Thailand before World War II, was a skilled craftsman. His main profession was repairing ceramics, a skill he brought with him from China. With his broad-minded outlook and kindness, Grandpa earned the respect and admiration of many people in the shophouse community where they lived.
This kindness extended to Yok, an orphan whom Grandpa took in and raised. Yok grew up in a warm and loving environment under his grandfather’s care, yet he still felt a sense of incompleteness. He often wondered why he didn’t have parents like other children.
One day, Yok came across an abandoned orphaned child. This made him realize that there are many unfortunate children in the world. He also noticed that some of his friends—like Pom, the son of Khunying Thonghor and a district officer—seemed to have complete families. However, Yok later discovered that behind their smiles was only pretense and emotional distance.
Through these experiences, Yok comes to understand that having a grandfather who truly loves him is what has made him a complete human being.
