Jordan, a young American diplomat, is forced into an arranged marriage with Betty, the granddaughter of a wealthy American businessman. Although their families believe they are a perfect match, Jordan has no feelings for her. Unable to accept this, he escapes to Thailand with his loyal driver, Ken.
In Thailand, Jordan changes his name to George and lives like a carefree backpacker around Khao San Road. However, his naïveté gets him into trouble when he is scammed by a fake tour guide and loses all his money.
George later meets Sanong, a tuk-tuk driver who is being attacked by debt collectors. He steps in to help, and in return, Sanong offers him and Ken a place to stay. Sanong’s wife, Somjit, is deeply touched by George’s kindness.
