Synopsis
Hua was born in Kunming, China. A humble laborer at the docks, he fell deeply in love with Mei, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Taokae Sua. The two swore an eternal oath of love, using bamboo twigs in place of incense and candles, vowing to remain together until death parted them.
Because their families disapproved of the relationship, the couple fled to Thailand to start a new life fueled by their immense devotion to one another. Upon arriving in Thailand, Hua found work as a jab-kang (manual laborer), hauling sacks of rice at a local granary. He and Mei lived in a weathered old wooden row house, building a life together through a self-organized traditional Chinese wedding ceremony.
Hua desperately hoped for a son to carry on the family lineage, but he was met with disappointment as all seven of their children turned out to be girls. Raising such a large family took a severe toll on Mei's health. Only a month after giving birth to their youngest daughter, Mei had to be hospitalized. Mai stepped in to help care for the children during this difficult time. Before Mei drew her final breath, she pleaded with Hua to have faith in his seven daughters and recognize their worth.
