Synopsis
Somsri is a young woman raised by her adoptive father, Som. She dreams of becoming a teacher, but despite her dedication, she fails her qualifying exams due to a corrupt system of nepotism and "connections." While listening to a bus conductor named Poen, Somsri learns of a driver shortage and decides to apply for the job herself.
The story introduces Thatthep Thawiphak, the son of a wealthy influential man named Phokin. Thatthep's car grazes Maeng-koy, a hill-tribe child Somsri had previously encountered during her exams. Thatthep insists the boy ran into his car after stealing meatballs. A kind man named Nimit happens to pass by and takes Maeng-koy to safety; Somsri eventually takes the boy under her wing.
Nimit is a high-principled young police officer who was bullied and demoted to a traffic cop for his integrity. Forced to find a new place to live, he moves into the Khlong Khot slum. Meanwhile, Thatthep, an urban architect working to develop the Khlong Khot community, is mugged by a local gang consisting of Yak, Bueng, and Luak. Somsri helps catch them, but the three escape. This leads to a misunderstanding where Thatthep believes Somsri is the gang leader, causing the community to view her as a "bad person."
Undeterred, Somsri continues her selfless acts, taking in Baitong, a homeless child pushed off a bus while begging, and Tee, a slum child whose last living relative has passed away. Seeing the deep-rooted issues in her community—homelessness, drugs, illegal gambling, and loan sharks—Somsri quits her driving job to become an informal teacher and community developer. Nimit supports her efforts, despite interference from Sutchai, a dressmaker obsessed with him, and Ta Biaow, the community leader who works for Phokin.
Phokin plans to evict the residents to build an "Entertainment Complex." Since the land has been abandoned for over ten years, he schemes to trick the slum dwellers into signing lease agreements, which would legally grant him full ownership. Phim-on, Thatthep’s fiancée, is jealous of his feelings for Somsri; she pretends to help the community while feeding information to Phokin.
When Thatthep finally discovers his father’s dark business dealings, he tries to help the residents but is sidelined. Members of the community movement begin to die one by one, causing the villagers to lose hope. However, Poen—who worked hard to put himself through law school—returns as a lawyer to represent the people.
The conflict escalates when Phokin’s men burn down Somsri's school. The villagers unite to rebuild it, but on the day of the grand opening, a charred body is found. The victim is unrecognizable, identified only by a silver bracelet Maeng-koy had given to Somsri. Devastated by the loss of their teacher, the local children decide to ordain as novices in her honor. Ultimately, the sacrifice of Khru Somsri serves as the final spark, emboldening the villagers to stand up and fight for their rights once and for all.
