Ma Ha Heng

Heng is the son of Huat, and he grew up in the slums of Bangkok. Because his life was plagued by constant misfortune and his family was poor, his father decided to send him away to become a novice monk. He lived with Luang Lung Hai, a relative and monk at a temple in Nakhon Phanom.
Heng is an honest, good-natured man who dedicated himself to studying Dhamma until he was ordained as a monk. He eventually passed the high-level Pali examinations, earning the title of "Maha" before eventually leaving the monkhood. Since then, everyone in the sub-district has called him Maha Heng. Now in middle age, Maha Heng remains at the temple to serve Luang Lung Hai, looking after the temple disciples and ensuring they stay on the right path, which has earned him the deep love of the community.
Despite his name meaning "Lucky," Maha Heng’s life is a string of bad luck. Once, when thieves tried to rob the temple's donation box, he came up with a plan to protect the money. While he successfully caught all the criminals, his plan backfired physically—leaving him knocked out cold. Nevertheless, he received high praise from Luang Lung Hai and the villagers for saving the temple's funds.
One day, after cleaning the alms bowls and sending the disciples off to school, Maha Heng met Sinsae Chee, a fortune teller who came begging for food. Maha Heng provided him with a meal and a large bag of canned goods to keep him from starving. In gratitude, Sinsae Chee read his physiognomy (Hngow Heng) and predicted that his luck was about to change: if he entered politics, he would become a minister; if he became a merchant, he would be incredibly wealthy; and if he had stayed a monk, he would have become an abbot.
However, Maha Heng doesn't believe a word of it.
