Synopsis
Phanphop is ordered by his superior to travel to the northern city of Chiang Mai to escort Luang Osot and his family back to Bangkok. Their mission is to treat a high-ranking nobleman suffering from a serious illness, as Luang Osot is renowned for his expertise in treating internal abscesses, despite having served in the north since his youth.
Leading a small military detachment of horses and riding an elephant, Phanphop’s journey is plagued by the supernatural. He encounters wandering spirits, the haunting cries of Pret (hungry ghosts), and a dhutanga monk. Along the way, he falls deathly ill with jungle fever, tormented by delirious visions of ghosts and swarms of Pret begging for merit.
Upon reaching Chiang Mai, Phanphop’s life is saved by Luang Osot’s medical care. During his recovery, he grows close to Luang Osot’s family, which includes three daughters: Saensane, Wongwaen, and Paenkam, who has been mute since a childhood illness.
Luang Osot’s wife, Bua, carries a dark secret from her past. Before joining Luang Osot and giving birth to Wongwaen and Paenkam, she was abducted and raped by a bandit named Suea Maen. Only Bua knows the truth: that Saensane is actually the daughter of the bandit. Though a soldier by profession, Phanphop shares a spiritual devotion to merit-making with Luang Osot, Wongwaen, and young Paenkam.
