Synopsis
In the metropolis of New York City, Duanpilat (or Annie), a young Thai-American girl, is enjoying her final year of university. Immersed in the American environment, she has become captivated by the Western lifestyle, occasionally forgetting her roots as a half-Thai, half-Isan American.
Her father, Luke, and her mother, Daoreung, moved to America decades ago after Luke, an engineer, met Daoreung while she was working as a beautiful nurse in Ubon Ratchathani. Annie is currently completing her final year of architecture studies and is in the midst of an internship.
Daoreung and Luke have been trying to persuade her to visit their hometown in Ubon during the upcoming semester break, but Annie constantly makes excuses. Her true motive is to avoid the "Isan-ness" of Grandma Duang, the owner of a famous Molam troupe in Ubon Ratchathani.
In Annie's mind, Ubon is like a Third World country, shaped by documentaries she’s seen on TV about starving children. This stands in stark contrast to the traditional Molam music her mother’s family is so proud of—they even have their own band and send CDs for her mother to play and her father to sing along to.
Deeply obsessed with Hip-Hop and Breakbeat, Annie feels a sense of disdain toward the Thai countryside. She even rants to her parents, arguing that Thailand is already a developing nation, and going all the way to "backwater" Ubon in Isan would be even worse.
Furious that his daughter would look down on her mother’s ancestors and her fellow countrymen, Luke issues an ultimatum: Annie must go with them, no excuses.
