Synopsis
Pan Pailin Chanakan, the beautiful niece of Saman Chanakan—owner of the largest and most luxurious jewelry company in Bangkok—sat before her mirror looking as if she wanted to die. Pan Pailin is the daughter of Saman’s younger brother, the original founder of Chanakan Jewelry. Saman had joined as a co-investor with a 50% stake, but after Pan Pailin's parents died in an accident when she was just a few years old, Saman took over the sole management of the company, including Pan Pailin’s inheritance.
Saman and his wife, Ramphai, raised Pan Pailin well, though never with the same level of devotion given to their own children, Jirayu and Kamolnit. Saman harbored little love for Pan Pailin, favoring and spoiling his own children instead. In contrast, Ramphai was more affectionate toward Pan Pailin, largely because her own children were stubborn and disregarded her words, while Pan Pailin was sweet, lovely, and obedient. Consequently, Aunt Ramphai was the only person in the Chanakan household who sincerely cared for her, though she could do little to help as she lived in constant fear of her husband.
Taking advantage of Pan Pailin’s gentle nature, Saman coerced and pleaded with her to marry Chanon, the son of Weera and Tipa, owners of a massive gemstone cutting factory. While Chanon claimed to truly love her, Saman’s primary goal was to use his niece as a tool to solidify a business alliance. Saman was a shrewd and stingy businessman, and this arranged marriage was the source of Pan Pailin’s immense suffering. She did not love Chanon at all; worse, he had a notorious reputation as a playboy. His philandering was a trait she found utterly unacceptable.
With the wedding scheduled for the very next day, Pan Pailin was desperate and saw no way out, wishing she could simply end her life to escape her karma. That evening at dinner, her face was clouded with misery. Her cousin, Kamolnit, mockingly remarked that she should be happy to marry a man as handsome and wealthy as Chanon instead of looking so world-weary.
Her patience wearing thin, Pan Pailin snapped back, asking that if Chanon was so wonderful, why didn't Kamolnit marry him herself? This sparked an immediate conflict. An infuriated Kamolnit complained to Saman, declaring that she wouldn't marry Chanon because she didn't love him and already had the man of her dreams: Kamut. According to her, Kamut was not only wealthy and handsome but brilliant, having built a luxury car dealership from nothing into a rapidly expanding empire. Kamolnit spoke with absolute confidence that Kamut was the only man she would ever marry.
Pan Pailin could only listen with a heavy heart, bitter that Saman allowed his own daughter to choose her partner while she was forced into a marriage of "suitability" arranged by her elders. Powerless to change her fate, she could do nothing but cry, frustrated by her own helplessness.
