Synopsis
The humorous novel series Phon Nikorn Kim Nguan, or Sam Gler (The Three Pals), authored by P. Intharapalit, is considered a masterpiece and is listed as one of the "100 Good Books Thais Should Read." It is a collection of humorous novels written continuously for a long period, from 1938 to 1968, comprising over 1,000 episodes. It can almost be said to be the story with the largest number of die-hard fans in Thailand.
Although each volume is a self-contained story, these characters have lived in the literary world for so long that they feel like familiar acquaintances to readers. The adventurous stories in each episode feature these charming young men—sons of wealthy merchants—who possess unique personalities ranging from charming to cheeky, naughty, and eccentric. These stories have also become excellent historical records of Thai society and the way of life in the past.
The fun, humor, and classic nature of this novel series have been adapted into television dramas many times. However, this is the first time these characters will come to life in flesh and blood on stage in the form of a musical. The events compiled for this musical focus on the youth of Phon, Nikorn, Kim Nguan, and Dr. Direk, who come together as a group after meeting and falling in love with four fierce young women: Nantha, Praphai, Nuanla-or, and Prapha. The women are just as formidable as the men are flirtatious and tricky. Furthermore, Chao Khun Patchanukphinat joins in to add to the fun of the story, all set against the delightful backdrop of Bangkok over 60 years ago.
What makes this television drama [adaptation] stand out are the various songs used in the story, all of which are classic old songs. Some are still catchy and familiar, while others are rare and hard to find. However, even though the songs were composed decades ago, the diverse lyrics and melodies still blend perfectly with the story—sweet when they need to be sweet, and funny when they need to be funny. This can be considered another charm of Thai music, which will be rearranged to be even more catchy for the audience.
